Compact leaves of 2-dimensional foliations on 4-manifolds: existence and self-intersection numbers

Resumo:

This is joint work with Y. Mitsumatsu. We describe homological conditions for embedded closed surfaces in 4-manifolds to be leaves of a foliation. This is used to study self-intersection numbers of compact leaves of foliations on products of two surfaces. Some interesting new examples of foliations with leaves of large self-intersection numbers are produced, some of which can be nicely visualized.
